Hatcher Pass Road (Palmer-Fishhook Road) is a 49-mile part-gravel road that connects the Parks and Glenn Highways.
Hatcher Pass Hiking Hikes at Hatcher Pass in the summer vary from gentle explorations ofthe mine buildings to heavy duty all day hikes with stream crossings and rock scrambles. Hatch- er Pass is a great hiking and berry picking location be- cause ofthe higher altitude, which allows open visibili- ty with stunning views of mountains and glaciers.

Gold Mint Trail
At Independence Mines. Trailhead with restroom s and user fee at Mile 14. Trail leads 9 miles one-way to the Mint Glacier.
Hard Rock Trail
One of several trails at Independence Mine. This half- mile trail is an easy walking tour to the restored mining camp .
Summit Lake Trail
Two mil es past Indep enden ce Mine you' ll reach 3,886 foot Hatcher Pass Summit. There is parking at the Summit Lake State Recreation Site. Follow the trail around Summit Lake for views of the Susitn a Valley and the Alaska Range.
HATCHER PASS
Hatcher Pass& Independence Mines Hatcher Pass is 3,000 feet above sea level and features the Independence Mine State Historical Park. Now a popular recreation area, this mine started in 1906. The mines had ten miles of tun- nel. Millions of dollars worth of gold was extract- ed here. Miners lived and worked in the build- ings until they were abandoned in 1951. Alaska State Parks has a self-guided walking tour. You can drive to the mines from the Palmer-Fishhook Road at Mile49.5 Glenn Highway. The road is only open in the summer and can be quite rocky and unimproved at the highest sections. West of In- dependence Mine, the road is also known as the Wasilla-Fishhook Road.
