PALMER
Alaska State Fair The Alaska State Fair (August 22nd to September 2nd, 2019) is Alaska's largest outdoor event, with increasing popularity every year. There are hundreds of vendors selling everything from t-shirts to Alaskan style modular housing, and a large midway. There's also a big 4-H barn with everything from turkeys to baby goats raised by local youngsters. Long daylight hours in the Alaska summer are offset by a short growing season, so the fair is a chance for Alaskans to unwind from a hectic summer. The Alaska State Fair is a ve-ry popular event for locals and tourists.

Home-Grown Produce Farming in Palmer began fading as farms became subdivisions. However, thanks to the new appreciation for organic and locally grown food and farmers' markets statewide, vegetable farms in the Valley are now thriving. Nearby Anchorage is a big fan of Palmer produce, which includes beautiful carrots, lettuces, rhubarb, potatoes, beets, squash, tomatoes, and cabbage. There's an "Alaska Grown" statewide project, promoting local foods. Look for the signs in stores with the distinctive "Alaska Grown" logo on local vegetables.
