East Alaska " with Bearfoot McCARTHY & KENNICOTT VANISHING GLACIERS
When the copper mills were built at Kennicott, there used to be so many glaciers everywhere that sections of the railroad tracks had to be set down over glacial ice instead of on the ground. Shifting tracks had to be relaid every spring. At that time, Kennicott Glacier loomed up in front of the mills. Jeanne Morris, who was a little girl then, living in Kennicott while her father worked there, told Bearfoot: "The Kennicott Glacier behind our house was so high, we didn't realize there was a mountain behind it!"
Glacier hikes are popular in Kennicott. You can walk on Root Glacier while here. Always hire a local guide for safety. Melting creates sinkholes and crevasses in the ice that are incredibly deep and unrecoverable. Guides know the terrain, provide equipment, and facilitate safe travel. Moraine is the rocky, gravel surface melted glaciers leave behind.
