Taking the copper ore down the mountain and pro- cessing copper at the mill buildings was dangerous work. Many of these buildings still contain the spe- cial tools, vats, and containers used to handle raw ore. You can see inside the buildings on guided tours of Kennicott. Hikes in the Kennicott backcountry can last a whole day, and reach historic mining areas.
