ALYESKA PIPELINE
The 800-mile Alaska Pipeline bisects Alaska from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez. There is a good viewing pulloff at Mile 8.4 on the Steese Hwy.
Midnight Sightseeing
You might not think the cold , dark days of winter would be the beginning of tourist season in Fairbanks. But visitors from across the world flock here for a chance to see the aurora borealis. In northern latitudes like Fairbanks, the aurora is visible high above the horizon. The University at Fairbanks conducts research on the Northern Lights, and visitors come to town in midwinter to check out the aurora. One unique service offered by local hotels is a courtesy "Northern Lights Wakeup Call " during high viewing activity -evenat3and4am.
VISITOR CENTER Fairbanks has a great multi-use visitor center that will prepare you for your time in this part of the state. The Morris Thompson Visitor and Information Center is located on 101 Dunkel Street, near the Chena River. There is a Cultural Center here as well. View extensive interpretive displays of Alaskan Native life and culture in Fairbanks. Cultural programs are also held at Morris Thompson. Outdoor pavement tile mosaics at Morris Thompson are based on traditional Athabascan beaded artwork.
The Fairbanks Alaska Public Lands Information Center is also located at Morris Thompson Cultural Center. Be sure to stop here for information and current road conditions, especially if you intend to travel north of Fairbanks on gravel and unimproved highways.
