GLENN HIGHWAY
ICEAGE
One of the most scenic paved highways in Alaska leads past the Matanuska Glacier.
MATANUSKA GLACIER
At the headwaters of the Matanuska River lies the Matanuska Glacier, which is easy to photograph from just off the Glenn Highway. The Matanuska Glacier is the largest road-accessible glacier in America. This is one of the most dramatic glaciers you can see from the road system. The glacier is 4 miles wide at its terminus, and extends for many miles, back into the Chugach Mountains. You can get an overall view of the Matanuska Glacier from the state campground, and a closeup view from the Matanuska Glacier Park, where you can walk on the glacier.

ROCKY ROADSIDE
Near Matanuska Glacier, Lion's Head is a unique natural rock outcropping at Mile107 ofthe Glenn Highway. This rock formation once served as an ancient territorial boundary marker for the Ahtna people of the Copper River Valley. Today, the road runs right by the mountain , which edges the huge Matanuska Glacier.
