Dalton Highway
The Dalton Highway is a supply road built in the 1970's during construction ofthe Trans-Alaska Pipe- line. At Fox, take the Elliott Highway north to reach the Dalton Highway at Livengood. The Haul Road is a challenge. It's 498 miles (1,000 miles round- trip) from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. Services are few and far between. The Dalton Highway is grav- el, roughly 28 feet wide (less than two lanes), and shared with large service trucks. The road can be

rough, and crosses several mountain passes with varying weather conditions, including snow. Gravel rocks can break windshields and cause flat tires. On rainy days, be careful of slick mud. You'll cross the Yukon River 140 miles from Fairbanks. The Dalton is only recommended for tourist travel in the summer months. With no cell service for hundreds of miles, you may wish to rent or buy a satellite tracker or phone in Fairbanks. Go with a guide or tour if this trip seems too difficult.
