Knik & The Iditarod Trail The original Iditarod Trail was a huge tangle of overland and river routes. Itfollowed Athabascan trails that dated to well back before the miners. During the Gold Rush of the 1890's, miners anchored their boats near what is now "Anchorage," and took smaller skiffs over to Knik. At Knik, they got on the Iditarod Trail and headed to Nome. A Knik-area dog musher, Joe Redington, was concerned that the art of dog mushing would be lost, because dogs were being replaced by snowmachines. Joe Redington and a small group of Wasilla-area local people came up with the idea ofthe current Iditarod race, hoping it would revive interest in	907-376-7755 sled dogs. They based the race on a 1925 humanitarian

Iditarod mail trail. The originallditarod Trail continued south, to Seward, through what is now Anchorage.
