Plan your trip in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve at the Copper Center Visitor Center.
Where The Park Begins
The Park Headquarters are located in Copper Center at Mile 106.8 of the Richardson Highway. The actual national park is located across the Copper River. To reach the park, drive north to the less developed Slana area, or south to the more developed Chitina-to-Kennicott area. You can also fly into the Park on small planes. Ask at the Park Headquarters.

Independent Travel
You 're pretty much on your own when you go hiking or camping in Wrangell-St. Elias. Unlike Denali National Park, you don't need a permit for camping or backpacking. Bearprooffood containers are free from Park Visitor Centers, and you can file a backcountry itinerary before you head out. Trails and routes in the park are not clearly marked. Stay on well established routes to have safe adventures in this truly wild park.

Avoid the spikes - save your tires --
Because even simple injuries like a sprained ankle can turn into an emergency, plan ahead. You'll have to plan out your route, the food you take, and any safety precautions, like telling your friends or family when you expect to be back, and when and where to launch a search ifyou haven't returned. You must have route findingskills and a topographic map ifyou 're going to head anywhere cross country. There's very little cell phone reception, so a satellite tracking device or an emergency locator beacon is advised.
Easy Walking Tours
Rangers at the National Park facility in Copper Cen- ter provide walking tours of the campus. In the photo above, a group oftourists poses nextto an interpretive sign at the edge of the Copper River.The Copper River flows through steep sandy banks known as bluffs.
