CENTER OF THE COPPER VALLEY The area around Glennallen is historically Athabascan, though Glennallen, which had its start as a highway camp, is not. You'll find Ahtna Athabascan villages at the confluences of the Copper River and its many tributaries. The Copper Valley itself is a natural corridor between mountain ranges. Salmon, birds, and caribou all migrate through the region. Glennallen's central location, with multiple roads heading in every direction, led people to call it "the hub." Indeed, early Ahtna Athabascans were famous long-distance travelers. It's part of living in a place this large. But when the 1898 gold miners came, they traveled around so much that the Ahtna nicknamed them "Those Who Come And Go."
