TWO HISTORIC ROADHOUSES
Rika’s Roadhouse operated from 1909 to 1947 on the Valdez-to-Fairbanks Trail. The builder, John Haj- dukovich, had a Swedish woman, Rika Wallen, oper- ate the roadhouse. She was given the roadhouse for $10 in 1923. The roadhouse is now in Big Delta State Historical Park, furnished in 1920’s-1930’s style, and open to the public for free. After gold was discovered in Fairbanks, there was a ferry at Rika’s for freight be- ing trucked north from Valdez to Fairbanks. The feder- al government imposed a tax here to encourage use of the Alaska Railroad on what is now the Parks Highway, instead of the Richardson. There’s another roadhouse, Sullivan’s Roadhouse, near the Delta Visitor Center.
ORIGINAL FARM-TO-TABLE
Delta’s history as a farm town dates from its earliest days as a roadhouse community. Roadhouses sup- plied much of their own food from gardens, chicken houses, and imported livestock. A short growing sea- son led to a heavy reliance on cabbage and other cold weather crops. Roadhouses supplemented fresh food meals with canned goods, brought over the trails.
