Excited About Alaska
Now that you've seen the Kenai Peninsula, pick up the Richard- son and Glenn Highway Bearfoot and head northeast of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway - to reach glaciers, small towns, and the Ca- nadian Border. The eastern part of the state is known for less road traffic, scenic highways, and an authentic feel. You can travel on the Glenn Highway for a day trip, or a multi-day or even longer ad- venture.
DAYTRIPS EAST
Palmer (Mile 42 Glenn Highway) Palmer has a farmer's market and museum with a visitor center. This small town has art shops, motels, banks as well as large supermar- kets. Visit the State Fair here on August 22 to September 2,2019.
Matanuska River (Mile 74 Glenn Highway) The Glenn Highway follows the Matanuska River, which is eating away at the road, taking hous- es with it. You can take a raft trip down the river, which threads be- tween two mountain ranges.
Matanuska Glacier (Mile 100-102 Glenn Highway) Take a guided walk or go down to the park for close-up spectacular pictures.
Sheep Mountain (Mile 113 Glenn Highway) Beautiful colored mountains, sun- light and shadows make for great photography. Look for sheep high in the hills.

Glennallen (Mile 187 Glenn Highway) Central town of the Copper River Valley. Ask at the Visitor Center about the region's many recreation rivers and thingstodo.
McCarthy & Kennicott (320 miles from Anchorage) These towns are located on the McCarthy Road , accessed off Mile 82 of the Richardson Highway. Mining history, hiking, tours, wilderness trips, & flightseeing.
Valdez (Mile 0 Richardson Highway) Gateway to Prince William Sound and ocean tidewater glaciers.
