Mount Marathon Annual Race
Alaskans crowd into Seward to watch the exciting Mount Marathon Race on the Fourth of July. Run- ners race to a stone marker on Mount Marathon, then hurtle back down the rocky slopes at high speed as part of the race. Runners face the dan- gers of rapidly descending scree and rock slopes in shorts and t-shirts. Most cross the finish line mud- dy, bruised and exhausted in downtown. You can go to Seward to cheer them on as a spectator.
Iditarod Trail Begins Here, Too
The "Iditarod Trail" is a modern name for a loose and enormous network of early Gold Rush trails. The trails intersect the Alaska road system at Nena- na, Knik, Girdwood. and Seward. The old Iditarod Trail began here in Seward on the shore, at MileO.

Kenai Fjords Park & Exit Glacier
This national park was created in the 1980's to pro- tect the Harding Icefield and the nearly 40 glaciers that flow out of it. Many of the glaciers reach the ocean in lovely fjords that can only be accessed by water. The park has two visitor centers, one in Seward's small boat harbor, and the other at Exit Glacier. Exit Glacier has ranger-led walks every day in the summer, that take about an hour and half. It also has a daily "pavilion talk." You can walk the Exit Glacier trail by yourself. There is also a very stren- uous 8-mile round trip Harding Icefield trail that takes a whole day to hike. Ifyou're going to go on a backcountry expedition, you should register at either Exit Glacier Nature Center or the main visitor center downtown.
