FISHING
There's a big parking area, with restrooms. You can fish from shore or use waders. Try Pixies or Bluefox spinners. You'll find this is a rela xed place where you can ask local fishermen for advice. When you 're done fishing a 'must see' is the abandoned Old Knik River Bridge.

If you 're on the way to Girdwood you can try your luck fishing at Bird Creek (Page 21).

To gear up for your adventure there are a number of options, from Mom and Pop fishing shops to big box stores. Eklutna Tailrace
The Eklutna Tailrace is located on Mile 4, of the Old Glenn Highway. Take the Old Glenn exit at about Mile 28, when heading north out of Anchorage on the Glenn High- way. (This exit is north of Eklutna and Eagle River.) Drive four miles on the Old Glenn Highway to the Eklutna Tailrace Day Use Area on your left.

Don't be embarrassed to ask for help. The locals here aren 't all fishing pros but many of the peo- ple fishing around you will be will- ing to share tips and information.
Fishing in Alaska has three main components: a rod with prop- er weight line, tackle (a lure or bait) and a net to bring the fish to shore. Other things you may need are a stringer, club, sharp knife and filet knife , a cooler and ice for your catch, and boots, waders, and rain gear. Of course a valid fishing license is an absolute ne- cessity, with a king stamp if you plan to fish for king salmon. Fish- ing in Alaska is addictive and the thrill of catching your own fish is an experience you 'll never forget.
