ANCHORAGE
ANCHORAGE FISHING
Easy Salmon Fishing
Fishing in Anchorage is a reality for both Alaskans and visitors at Ship Creek, in the heart of downtown Anchorage. Just north of Anchorage you can fish at the Eklutna Tailrace (Page 19), and just south of An- chorage you can fish at Bird Creek (Page 21).
Ship Creek In Downtown Anchorage
Ship Creek is located behind the Ulu Factory on Ship Creek Avenue. Ifyou came to Alaska to fish, you can wet your line right away - within walking distance of your downtown Anchorage hotel. With some luck, you can be fishing a few hours after getting off your plane. Ship Creek is a clear water stream that holds king and silver salmon. The king salmon run goes from early June until mid-July. Silver salmon run from late July to late August. There's a nice fish-view- ing bridge, and a walkway with platforms where you can view fishermen.
Fishing is allowed from the creek mouth to a special- ly marked cable. Fishing is closed during the night. As always in your Alaskan trip, check regulations be- fore fishing. You'll need to buy both a fishing license and a salmon stamp before fishing for kingsalmon. To add to the excitement, the Downtown Soup Kitchen has a week long salmon derby here every mid-June.
