FAIRBANKS
A24 Hour Day
When you're in Fairbanks, take con- trol of your adventure, and get out and enjoy the long summer days. With nearly twenty-four hours of daylight, Fairbanks isn't a place to slow down. The summer events here are attended by friendly peo- ple who are maximizing their sum- mer fun.
Summer Weather
Fairbanks is warmer in the summer than most other towns in Alaska. That means the weather is most often pleasant here, even if other parts ofthe state are rainy. Ifthere's smoke in the air, or haze over town, it's from summer forest fires that burn in the Interior, often hundreds of miles away, or even in Siberia. You can ask at local visitor centers about any fire conditions near towns and places you wish to explore.
Evening Activities
Between Pioneer Park and events like Golden Days and the Midnight Sun Festival, you can find some- thing going on every night during the summer in Fairbanks. Easyeve- ning activities are: a walk at Cream- ers Field, a stroll downtown, or a walk around Pioneer Park.
Preserving Local History
Fairbanks has worked hard to preserve its historic buildings. In 1967, as Fairbanks grew into a modern city, local people began organizing to save many historic log cabins, churches, and homes. They started groups: the Ta- nana-Yukon Historical Society, the Fairbanks Historic Preservation Foundation, and the Friends of the Tanana Valley Railroad among them. Then Fairbanks saved the Warren G. Harding railroad train, the Riverboat Nenana, and most recently, part of the sternwheeler that brought founding father E.T. Barnette to Fairbanks in the first place.
A group started the Pioneer Muse- um, celebrating local history. An- other group, mainly pilots, began amassing historic planes, snow- mobiles and other equipment at the Pioneer Air Museum. There are dozens of historic buildings and museums all over Fairbanks. Many buildings in Fairbanks are on the Register of Historic Places. In Pio- neer Park, cabins have interpretive signs that name the original Gold Rush owners of the cabins.
