LOG CABINS
I Built My House Of Sticks
All over the world, people have built their homes of whatever is available in the surrounding environment. In the tropics, house walls were made of coconut fronds. In the desert, houses were fashioned of hard- packed mud. On the Great Prairie, they were made of sad. In Alaska , homes are made of logs. The logs are all kinds of sizes: large, small and in-between. In this part of Alaska they're usually built of white spruce. Along the rivers from Nenana north, the white spruce are enormous and make great-looking homes.

As you travel around Alaska, take a good, hard look at the old log cabins that you'll see here and there. Some cabins are made with long hor- izontal logs. Others are made with shorter, eas- ier-to-handle upright logs. Some are carefully notched atthe corners. Others are just nailed into a corner upright log. Since Alaska's old log cab- ins were built with what was at hand they were caulked with sphagnum moss, sawdust, glue and oakum - or sometimes with old socks, ripped up shirts, or crumpled newspapers and magazines!
