Into Interior Alaska
Thetown of Nenana,50 milessouth of Fairbanks, has an important history. Nenana is located on three transportation systems: the Alaska Rail- road , the Tanana River, and the Parks Highway. In the 1920's, it was also the start of the Iditarod Mail Trail to Nome , and played a huge role in the famous dog-powered Nome Serum Run of 1925. It is well worth stopping here and getting a taste of what a Native Alaskan river village is like.
Nenana Ice Classic
The Nenana Ice Classic is a direct link to old-time Alaska. It began in 1917, when railroad workers whiled away the days of spring guessing when the ice would go out and the work could start up again. A large black and white wooden tripod is set up on the Nenana River ice. People all over the state guess the hour and minute when break- up will occur and the tripod will fall into the river. This year the ice went out on April 14th, shattering records for the earliest breakup ever. Buy your tickets in Nenana.
