ANCHOR POINT
FISHING
Fishing opportunities in Anchor Point include bait fish- ing and fly-fishing in the Anchor River. Charters launch into Cook Inlet - fishing for ocean-caught salmon and halibut. Beach life prevails with opportunities to walk the beach, camp near the river, and explore the Anchor State Recreation Area alongside a day of fishing.
The Cook Inlet fishery is varied in the types of fish available. Besides halibut there are four major types of salmon (king, red , pink and silver). There are many charter services for both fresh water and ocean fish- ing. Boats launch from the Anchor Point Beach or the mouth of the Anchor River. Fish caught on a charter can be professionally processed and sent to the desti- nation of your choice. The Annual King Salmon Calcut- ta is on May 10th and 11th, 2019.
TRACTOR LAUNCH
Visitors of all ages enjoy watching the boats being launched into the Cook Inlet via tractors from the Anchor Point beach. The tractor launch is located in the Anchor River State Recreation Area, which is also home to five campgrounds, well-equipped RV parks, and a stretch of the Anchor River. The tractor launch runs from the last Saturday in April until Labor Day.
HOMESTEADING
Various groups of European explorers, gold min- ers, and fur traders left their mark on the Anchor Point area in the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the largest influences still found here today is the rich culture ofthe Russians and their descen- dants. However, it was the 1940s before Anchor Point was permanently settled. Early settlers heated their homes by scouring the beaches for pieces of coal.
