Girdwood is a charming small town about 40 miles south of Anchorage. The community of Girdwood started as a supply base for nearby placer gold mines. Girdwood has a population of about 2,000 people, and is a ski resort town located near the base of Mount Alyeska, Alaska 's largest ski slope. In Girdwood, you can ride the tram for a scenic view, and hike and bike on Mt. Alyeska. Local and nearby opera- tors offer rafting and glacier viewing. You can also explore the originallditarod Trail and Crow Creek Gold Mine. Girdwood is also well known for its good restaurants.
MOUNTAIN TOWN FOREST FAIR The Girdwood Forest Fair is a longstanding summer event that takes place over Fourth of July Weekend. This year the Forest Fair takes place from July 5th - July 7th . Hun- dreds of vendors from all over Alaska set up shop in the Forest Fair Park. You can buy all sorts of things, like Goat Milk Soap and Tye Dye Kits. Several stages emphasize the musicality of Girdwood, and bands play all day long to crowds of hula-hoopers. Even the local radio station broadcas~ts the fair live.
