DENALI NATIONAL PARK
RAFT TRIPS IN THE NENANA CANYON
Rafting Adventure
Local raft companies prepare clients for the rafting trips at their respective offices, located around the Denali Park entrance area. Once a trip is booked, the entire party is expected to arrive on time at the raft company's designated business location. Here , each person is outfitted with a dry suit, and is shown basic survival and rafting information. After the briefing, the rafters take raft company buses to the departure point on the river.
On many occasions, rafters are allowed to choose between traveling in an "oar raft" or "paddle raft." Both rafts have skilled guides, but different rafting styles. Many tourists choose oar rafting, because only the guide steers the raft, with two rowing oars. This allows rafters to view scenery from all directions and have a more controlled and less demanding ride . With paddle rafting, every person on the boat will be given a paddle and will use their paddles under direction from the guide. The front of the raft is the most adventurous location.
Going Hiking
There are a number of options for hiking at Denali. You can hike on trails near the Park Entrance, or around the Eielson Visitor Center. There are also hiking trails at Savage River and Wonder Lake. Or, you can take a ranger-led hike in the backcountry. Bring proper gear on your hikes or walks, including appropriate clothing, a backpack, water and snacks. Check out the flyers posted at the visitor centers and talk to the rangers to find out more about Discovery Hikes, entrance area walks, and backcountry adventures. If you are camping in Denali Park during your hike, you 'll go to the Denali Visitor Center for permits.
